Discussion Question 2

In what ways are the themes and concerns of Pride and Prejudice timeless?  Why do readers still relate to Austen's characters and story today?

  1. The main characters back then were intelligent humans...so therefore those emotions and feelings will act on humans of today as well. Everyone is raised differently in different areas and therefore misunderstandings will arise when there is not enough communication between a set of people. One type of 'people' or culture may think they are better than another type bec. they are ignorant of the other's culture, etc.

  3. The themes and concerns are timeless, because they are all things we think about today. Marriage is something a little girl thinks about from the day she can talk until it happens. Her parents want her to marry someone who is financially stable, but know it may not always happen. Also normally a person wants to marry someone who is attractive, just like Mr. Darcy does. Miscommunications are always going to happen no matter what time period a person may live in.

  4. Today, most individuals are very different from the people who lived in the 18th century. Mannerisms, social graces, and the general outlook on life was vastly different then than things are nowadays. However, some things are timeless and this is true especially in the case of Pride and Prejudice. Women are far more independent now than they have been in the past and yet still it is impossible to say that no girl ever dreams about her wedding day. That is a mostly common occurrence and therefore a similarity to Austen's novel. We still relate to her characters today because even though times and places change, human nature will always remain the same and there will always be the same sorts of conflicts and tension that will arise. And by seeing how eighteenth century women coped with such ordeals we can begin to compare ourselves to them and see that we are not quite so different as we had supposed.

  5. People find "Pride and Prejudice" relevant today because of the themes that are still applicable today. Young girls still like to think about their future spouses even though lots of them are much more independent than in previous years. Miscommunications still happen in modern times. Judgment of another person before you get to know them is something that is done every day. Jane Austen's book, "Pride and Prejudice," is relevant because people are still doing the same things people in Austen's time did.

People find "Pride and Prejudice" relevant to today because of the events that occur during "Pride and Prejudice". Young girls like to think that their future husband even thought a lot of them are much more independent than in previous years. In today's time people still think that the first impression makes who the person is;instead of getting to know that person. Jane Austen's Novel is very relevant to today's time and day.

  7. Pride and Prejudice is considered a timeless classic for some of the same reasons the Bible had withstood so many years: people are people and tend to repeat the same things that others have done in the past. When themes of the book are still happening in the world today, this makes the book relatable, and it remains a classic. One of humanity's biggest downfalls is the sin of pride. Another would be a phrase we have all heard before: don't judge a book by its cover. Humans are familiar with the feelings of pride and prejudice. These feelings coupled with a love story make it the perfect book to be considered timeless.

  8. The plot in this novel is timeless because it is about the love shared between two unlikely characters. Neither Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy were looking for love but they stumbled upon it. At first they misjudged each other but over time, the two grew very fond of each other. Dispite their differences, the two fall madly in love.I think people can relate to the characters in this story because we have all misjudged somebody during some point in our life.
